1984 Tropic Hunt

Your online guide to the zaniness of the 1984 Tropic Hunt!

No cover image available!

When:  6/3/1984

Where: Across Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties

The first Hunt was South Florida\'s introduction to the \"Hunt\" experience.

It was spread across three counties, which meant that everyone needed to drive to participate. This had the advantage because one large central location wasn\'t needed (kind of hard to close off downtown Coral Gables for most of a weekend!), and it made people get out and see places in South Florida that they normally wouldn\'t. On the other hand, it made people speed to get between all the sites, which wasn\'t safe.

\nThis Hunt is one of my most memorable Hunts…mainly because of the candy canes…I was 13 at the time the Hunts began, and I joined a friend of mine and his father on the journey across all of South Florida. The novelty of a game that was so different than what everyone was used to…and so loony at the same time…it was a sure winner.

Puzzle: Howard Schnellenberger billboards
Location: Boca Raton and Tamiami Park
Description:
At Tamiami Park (replicated in a park in Boca Raton) there was a billboard with four huge pictures of former University of Miami football head coach, Howard Schnellenberger, smoking a pipe. Above him, there was a headline reading, "My Canes couldn't be licked. These can." The pictures were identical except that the pipes were different colors, (from left to right) green, brown, orange and blue with the smoke coming out of them forming four different numbers 48, 65, 41 and 19 (respectively). Hunt volunteers were handing out re-and-white candy canes.
